Places to Eat in Karakol

78 Hotel and Cafe

Our personal favorite for family gatherings and birthdays. It is cozy, clean, and serves the best European cuisine in town. Don't miss: Their incredible ice cream and arguably the best coffee in Karakol.

Dastorkon Cafe

The go-to spot for authentic national cuisine. The interior features a beautiful ethnic design, and they often host free folklore performances in the evenings.

Altyn-Kumara

This is where the locals eat. If you are looking for the best shashlyk (kebabs) in the city, this is the place. It’s simple, authentic, and delicious.

Karakolka Live Trout

Located within walking distance of Happy Nomads. You can enjoy fresh trout prepared right on the barbecue in a lovely outdoor setting.

Where to Stay: Happy Nomads Yurts & Hostel

For the most authentic experience in Karakol, we highly recommend basing yourself at Happy Nomads Yurts. It is more than just a place to sleep; it is a family-run stay where you can experience genuine Kyrgyz hospitality.

  • Unique Comfort: You can choose to stay in a traditional yurt or a modern yurt cottage that includes an attached private bathroom—the perfect mix of nomadic style and modern comfort.

  • English-Speaking Hosts: Run by a welcoming, English-speaking family, you’ll have local experts on hand to help you with everything from booking Go Bus tickets to planning your trekking routes.

  • The Full Experience: Every stay includes a delicious, hearty breakfast to fuel your adventures, and the team can even prepare packed lunches for your day hikes.

Essential Stops & Tips

Souvenirs: Issyk Kul Brand (OVOP)

This Kyrgyz-Japanese "One Village One Product" project is excellent. You’ll find high-quality handmade felt goods, natural soaps, and local jams made by women's cooperatives.

Sunday Animal Market (Mal Bazar)

The Golden Rule: Don’t listen to guidebooks that say you must go at 5:00 AM. Unless you are actually buying or selling a cow, 7:00 or 8:00 AM is the perfect time. The light is better for photos, and the market is in full swing.

  • Pro Tip: Wear sturdy shoes you don't mind getting muddy!

Step Back in Time: Karakol Historical Museum

Housed in a beautiful 1887 merchant’s mansion, this museum is a must-visit for its Scythian artifacts and local crafts.

The Ella Maillart Exhibition

The highlight is a stunning collection by Ella Maillart, a Swiss traveler who documented Kyrgyzstan in 1932.

  • The Photos: 125 rare black-and-white images of 1930s bazaars and nomadic life in the Juuku Valley.

  • The Hall: A beautifully renovated space that captures the "old" Karakol as it looked nearly 100 years ago.

  • Location: Karakol Historical Museum on Google Maps

  • Price: Approx. 100–200 KGS.

Money & Practicalities

  • ATMs: We recommend Demir Bank, Optima or KICB for international cards.

  • Exchange: Baisal is reliable and often open on weekends.

  • Taxi: Download the Yandex Taxi app. It works like Uber, has an English interface, and prevents you from having to negotiate prices.

Groceries & Supplies

If you need to stock up for a trek or just want some snacks, these are the most reliable supermarkets in town. They are well-stocked and offer a similar experience to European grocery stores.

  • Globus: The largest and most modern supermarket in Karakol. It’s open 24 hours and has a great deli section for ready-made meals.

  • Asia Supermarket: Another excellent choice for fresh produce, dairy, and travel essentials.

Final Checklist for Your Stay

  • Water: We recommend using purification tablets if drinking from rivers during hikes.

  • Apparel: Even in summer, Karakol evenings are cool. Bring a light jacket!

How to Get to Karakol (from Bishkek and Almaty)

Forget the crowded marshrutkas; here are the best ways to reach us in 2026:

  1. By Air: Fly from Bishkek to Karakol’s brand-new airport in just 45 minutes (approx. 3,600–4,000 KGS). Flights run on Thursdays and Sundays, and sometimes more frequently in high season. Check the Asman Airlines app and book 1–2 weeks in advance!

  2. Go Bus: Much more comfortable than a standard mini bus (marshrutka). You can book via their app. If you have trouble with the Russian interface, Happy Nomads guests can WhatsApp us, and we will book the ticket for you!

  3. From Almaty (Kazakhstan): There is a daily bus from Almaty’s Sairan station at 10:00 AM via the Kegen border. The trip takes about 7 hours and can be booked online.
